40 killed by IS-linked militants in Uganda school attack

Share

Tragically, a devastating attack occurred at Lhubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe, Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The attack, carried out by militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, resulted in the deaths of at least 40 people, primarily students. Eight others sustained critical injuries during the incident, which took place around 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

Reports indicate that the assailants, affiliated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a Ugandan rebel group operating from the DRC and recognized as an IS branch in Central Africa, set fire to a dormitory and looted a food store. Following the attack, the ADF members fled towards Virunga National Park in the DRC. The Uganda People’s Defence Forces and the police have launched a search operation to apprehend the perpetrators, with the army deploying planes to aid in tracking the rebel group.

According to police spokesperson Fred Enang, the deceased individuals have been transported to Bwera Hospital, where the critically injured victims are also receiving medical treatment. Major General Dick Olum from the Ugandan army stated that some male students were burned or hacked to death, while others, predominantly girls, were abducted by the militants. Given the extent of burns on some of the bodies, DNA tests will be necessary to identify them accurately.

This tragic incident follows another attack that occurred a week earlier when suspected ADF fighters targeted a village in the DRC near the Ugandan border. The Ugandan authorities are undoubtedly working diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore security in the affected region.
