Srinagar: The renovated International Quality historic Bakshi Stadium is a dream that is a reality for Kashmiri athletes, and is fast becoming the go-to place for athletes from the region.
Since Lieutenant Governor J&K, Manoj Sinha, inaugurated the stadium on August 5th for Kashmiri athletes following a major renovation, the stadium has attracted an enormous number of youngsters and professional teams for their daily training.
The stadium is a part of its own past and is among J&K’s biggest stadiums. It has hosted numerous high-profile events since its first opening on the 17th of September, 1960.
The stadium has been through several improvements and upgrades throughout the years, the most recent of which was in the year 2008, when J&K was the venue for the Santosh Trophy football competition.
However, the stadium’s modernization and huge renovation started in the year 2016, was unprecedented and made the venue one of the largest stadiums in India that is able to host FIFA-approved sports events.
The newly renovated stadium was officially opened before a crowd of athletes on the 5th of August by LG J&K, Manoj Sinha, after undergoing significant changes and improvements.
The entire stadium has been transformed from the turf to the seating capacity to the view. The stadium renovation cost around sum of Rs 59 crore. It was carried out through National Projects Construction Corporation.
While it is predominantly a football stadium that is of the International level it also has an athletic grass track surrounding the field of football that has been constructed. The stadium’s capacity to accommodate fans has also been increased and can now accommodate more than 35000 people.
The team’s dressing rooms have been upgraded with modern amenities required by any team.
The old structures were also renovated. New seating has been added inside the central pavilion as well as in the pavilion on either side. The roof of the central pavilion has also been updated.
The stadium’s most popular feature is the four floodlights. Each floodlight is equipped with 56 lights, which is enough to illuminate a top-of-the-line football game at night.
J&K Sports Council is the caretaker of Bakshi Stadium, Bakshi Stadium and almost all the sports facilities located in J&K.
