Former US Prez Donald Trump arrested, pleads ‘not guilty’

According to CNN, former US President Donald Trump was reportedly arrested at the federal courthouse in Florida. He pleaded not guilty to federal criminal charges related to unlawfully retaining national security documents after leaving office and allegedly lying to officials during their attempts to recover them.

During the arrest, deputy marshals processed Trump, including taking his fingerprints. His co-defendant and aide, Walt Nauta, was also arrested, fingerprinted, and processed.

The plea was made before US Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman in a federal court in Miami. This sets the stage for a legal battle that is likely to unfold over the coming months as Trump campaigns to regain the presidency in the November 2024 election.

The hearing itself was closed to cameras and live broadcasts, keeping the proceedings private.

This is Trump’s second courtroom appearance in recent months, following his not guilty plea to state charges in New York in April, which were related to a hush-money payment made to a porn star.

As the first former president to face federal criminal charges, Trump maintains his innocence and accuses President Joe Biden’s administration of targeting him. He took to social media on Tuesday, referring to Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is leading the prosecution, as a “Trump hater.”
