Pakistan’s Ex-PM Imran Khan Booked in Land Scam Case

Share

On Sunday, former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, was booked in yet another case related to the fraudulent purchase of over 5,000 kanals (625 acres) of land at significantly lower prices in Punjab province. This latest case adds to the total number of cases against Khan, which has now surpassed 140 since his ouster as prime minister in April of the previous year.

The cases against Khan span various allegations, including terrorism, incitement to violence, arson attacks, blasphemy, attempted murder, corruption, and fraud. The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) of Punjab registered a new case against Khan, along with his sister Uzma Khan, her husband, and former Punjab chief minister Usman Buzdar.

According to the ACE, Khan and the other suspects are accused of purchasing 5,261 kanals of valuable land in Punjab’s Layyah district at significantly lower rates. The land was allegedly bought for PKR 13 crores, whereas its actual value is estimated to be PKR 6 billion (600 crores). The ACE also stated that the suspects, leveraging their political influence, allegedly acquired 500 kanals of land from local residents who had been residing there for many years.

The ACE conducted a raid to arrest Uzma Khan and her husband in Lahore’s Zaman Park area on Sunday, but they managed to evade capture. Uzma Khan is considered the prime suspect in the case, as the land, totaling over 5,000 acres, is registered in her name.

Imran Khan, a former cricketer-turned-politician, was removed from power in April of the previous year after losing a no-confidence vote. He has previously claimed that his ouster was part of a conspiracy led by the United States to undermine him due to his independent foreign policy decisions regarding Russia, China, and Afghanistan.
