“Watch” Kashmiri Girl Plays role of ‘Husna’ in ‘The Kerala Story’

The Kerala Story" is a film that delves into the controversial topic of love jihad, depicting the conversion of women in Kerala to Islam and their alleged abduction to ISIS-controlled territories.

A Kashmiri Pandit girl, Eleena, residing in Delhi, has made a name for herself in the film industry. Originally from Kokernag and belonging to a family that migrated to Jammu, she recently appeared in the film “The Kerala Story” as the character ‘Husna’.

Additionally, she played the role of ‘Roohi’ in the short film ‘Idli Amma’ (2023), a biopic about M Kamalathal. Eleena is optimistic that ‘Idli Amma’ will gain national recognition and win a prestigious National Award.

Eleena pursued a bachelor’s degree in journalism at the Institute of Home Economics (Delhi University) and received acting training from The Indian School of Acting in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. Currently, she is pursuing a Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Eleena shared that she initially had little knowledge about entering the film industry. However, after coming to Delhi in 2017, she connected with influential people in the film and theater community who guided her on becoming an actor. Her maternal grandfather’s passion for cinema inspired her, and she watched classic films from various genres, striving for sophistication and class.

Understanding the importance of proper training, Eleena took the advice to enroll in acting classes. After two years of contemplation, she joined an acting school, where she honed her skills for one year. Shortly after completing her training, she landed a role in the film “Idli Amma,” alongside veteran actress Sarita Joshi, which is set to be released soon.

While Eleena has received numerous project offers, she has been selective, preferring characters with artistic depth and striving for work that satisfies her and reflects her pride.

She encourages aspiring actors from Jammu and Kashmir to study the art of acting, pursue training, watch films, read books on acting techniques, engage with literature, develop their imagination, and practice mindful listening to become accomplished actors. Eleena emphasizes the need for a change in societal expectations that often prevent individuals from pursuing their dreams, resulting in unfulfilled lives.

“The Kerala Story” is a film that delves into the controversial topic of love jihad, depicting the conversion of women in Kerala to Islam and their alleged abduction to ISIS-controlled territories. The film’s teaser, released in November 2022, faced backlash for its portrayal of Kerala as a hub of radical Islamic terrorism. A case was registered against the director under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. The director has assured that the film itself will address concerns and substantiate its claims upon release.
